On Tuesday, Youtube unveiled a new censorship scheme for the poorly defined “Controversial Religious or Supremacist” content. At almost exactly the same time, Jordan Peterson was briefly locked out of his Youtube channel – an act that seems to have been triggered by this new censorship scheme.
There are numerous reasons to take this scheme as an assault on free speech. First, and most importantly, one cannot deny the increasing trend of censorship and self censorship in the media, social media, academia, law, and the workplace (did I miss any segment of society?).
In an atmosphere such as this, even a brief interruption, such as the one Jordan Peterson experienced, is reason to be suspicious. After all, it’s not paranoia if people really are out to get you.
What’s interesting is that this new scheme doesn’t involve blocking controversial content (which you would expect if it were truly hate speech) – simply sandboxing the content.
When you sandbox the content, it can still be seen and appears to the publisher like everything is normal. However, it doesn’t appear on search. This means that only people looking specifically for that content will ever find it.
This sandboxing has already occurred at Reddit, where all Donald Trump supporters are quarantined at /r/The Donald, and the “mainstream” subreddits of /r/politics, and /r/news are vigorously policed and almost never contain any pro-Trump or dissenting viewpoints. Facebook already notes your political views and shows you “appropriate” content.
If this Sandboxing continues, it will cause conservatives to continue to distract and entertain themselves, while the vast majority of the population remains completely unaware that there are a large mass of people who share different viewpoints from them.
Sandboxing makes it impossible for conservatives to check, debate or challenge the rhetoric of the left, and undermines the purpose of free speech in society.
Most importantly, if conservatives allow themselves to be sandboxed, there will be NO WAY for conservative voices to expose corruption or wrongdoing in society.
They will shout as much as possible, and nobody will be able to hear.
What to do when Sandboxing is complete
Once Sandboxing is complete across all social media, it will be virtually impossible for a person to come across a conservative viewpoint unless they are actively looking for it.
When that happens, don’t forget your printer! I know it’s old fashioned, but you can still plaster your neighborhood with the latest news, and direct them to reputable sites that are still available.
In the event of a full shutdown of social media, make sure you have phone and contact information for your close associates, and perhaps even meet-up plans to rally at a certain point.
Remember THIS IS NOT NORMAL – And it’s not paranoid if they are really out to get you.
Free speech only has to die once and it’s dead forever.
